May I help you with your housekeeping?

The title of this post is taken from a 1940s column called ‘Guide for Good Wives’ in The Herald newspaper by Sarah Dunne. I wrote an article with the same name about a collection of recipes I have that were torn out of Australian women’s magazines and newspapers from the 1930s and ‘40s - handy hints, recipes and tips for managing your household in lean times.

I found this particular collection at a garage sale in Coburg years ago and, reading them recently while taking a break from Covid lockdown-induced cupboard sorting, I mused on the ways that households are managing some eighty years later with our own shifting financial and social circumstances, panic-buying and stockpiling.

You may find some handy tips that suit you today, or a recipe you’d like to try.
